Onion Valley
Catrike Speed no. 673, 8/14/2006
The climb to Onion Valley, about 5000 ft in 12.8 miles, is one
of the major HWY 395 climbs I still had to tackle on my trike. Hugh Murphy
offered to sag for me on the climb. This climb can get wickedly hot. Hugh is
organizing the Widow maker, a race which includes both Onion Valley and
Horseshoe meadows in one day. Here are the pictures. I reached the top in 3hrs
10 min. About an hour longer as compared to my time on an upright. To get
the most bang out of driving to the desert I topped the day with the climb of
Townes Pass from Panamint Springs. 3140 ft in 11.3 miles. This climb never fails
to deliver spectacular scenery, incredible clear and star filled sky but also
agony between the 2500 and 3500 feet levels.
