Started taking cycling seriously in 1992 , rehabilitating from a chronic back problem sustained in polo. First long distance event was the 1993 Markleeville Deathride.

Total cycling 1993: 7265 miles with an elevation gain of 765,930 ft.

In 1994 he finished 54th in his first double century, the Death Valley DC, in 14hr 55min, wondering how anybody could finish in less than 13 hours. Completed all 7 of the Triple Crown DC's in 1994 , 6 in 1995, 6 in 1996 and 8 in 1997

Qualified for RAAM in the 1995 Furnace Creek 508 , finishing 4th in 30hr 24min.
